First written in 2014-2015, with the aim that the “parashat hashavua” Covenant & Conversation essays would contain an examination of ethics and morality within the weekly parsha, this series by Rabbi Sacks was originally written in 5775, the second year that an intentional theme was explored in each essay.
This introductory essay by Rabbi Sacks includes the key point that “There are tensions between Jewish ethics and the individualism and relativism of the contemporary West, but the greatness of Judaism has been its iconoclasm, its willingness to challenge the idols of the age.”
This series of essays was later edited by Rabbi Sacks into a book published by Koren, similarly titled Essays in Ethics.
